ever gets to the point where he's really going to cut the big three. i do give the president a great deal of credit for fighting the republicans like this and standing up to them. they're a reckless party and they don't care if they have another financial meltdown in this country. this is one of the most un-american things i think i have ever seen play out by a political party. president obama is putting politics aside. it's time for the republicans to do the same. i mean, when the president says this may sink my presidency, he's willing to have that happen as long as it saves the country financially. for once, for sure, we can turn to washington and see that there is someone and it happens to be president obama who's willing to put country first at the stake of -- at the sake of possibly losing his base in a very important election cycle and it may, of course, jeopardize his re-election. he's got 77 people in the house who signed on a resolution saying no cuts to the big three and willing to go to war with them as well to save the economy. where are the republicans? for the latest o

in the unemployment line. it's that big of an issue. new polling in four key swing states tell the story. over 50% of voters in ohio, missouri and montana say that they will be less likely to vote for president obama if he makes any cuts. that's any cuts to medicare/medicaid benefits. the same holds true if the president signs off on any deal that cuts social security. president obama will never win reelection if he loses 50% of the voters in a state like ohio. now, there is really good reason -- no good reason anywhere to put entitlement cuts on the table with numbers like this. this is mind-boggling to the democratic caucus right now. i know, i spoke to a dozen of them tonight at a function here in washington. republicans. they will never take it as a tried-off for raising taxes on the rich. eric canter made that crystal clear this morning. >> i can tell you one thing, we are united as republicans to say now is not the time to raise taxes. i have talked with the speaker. he is not for increase in taxes. >> we are not for any net new revenues right now. what we want to focus on is getting people

the debt ceiling to go up and take cuts to the big three off the table. mcconnell late today put out his last chance plan. >> i would advocate that we pass legislation giving the president the authority, the authority to request of us an increase in the debt ceiling that would take us past the end of his term. that is what he has said. he said he will not sign a debt ceiling that does not take us past the end of his term. >> so mcconnell's plan would allow republicans to vote against the debt increase, but it would allow the president to increase the debt. the downside for the righties? cuts to the big three would be off the table. that's been their mission all along. the tea party jumped all over mcconnell, right wing blogger eric rashgson said mitch mcconnell is making a historic capitulation. consider sending mcconnell a weasel. john boehner is on board with the senate leader mcconnell. he ran over to fox news and did major cya. >> i think everybody believe there is needs to be a backup plan if we cannot come to an agreement, and i think mitch has done good work. >> backup plan? at th

a democratic president at the table willing to make major changes in the big three, to the tune of $4 trillion across the board, and the republicans won't take the deal. it's rather amazing. why? are they afraid that president obama might do well with independent voters? are they miscalculating the fact that the base would be furious with the president if he were to cave in on the big three? and president obama tonight in my opinion is emerging as the most honest broker maybe washington has seen in a long, long time. he openly states he's willing to put his presidency on the line to bring both sides together to get a deal, and the only way he believes that can be done is if some revenue from the wealthiest americans comes into the treasury. and the republicans won't budge. it's amazing, it really is amazing. president obama is trying to make an honest negotiations at the decade. this is what republicans have wanted for decades. they have a democratic president that's willing to do it and they walk? because of revenue? amazing. for more on tonight's meeting, sam young man. white house correspon

. and corporate america has told mcdonnell and boehner not to budge on issues like $80 billion subsidies for big oil factory farms and weapons peddlers. they've been told don't budge on $100 billion that america lauzs every year on offshore banking that corporations want to take advantage of. what they've been told they can do is decimate social security, decimate medicare, decimate domestic programs, as long as those domestic programs don't benefit corporate america. we know the truth. the truth is ronald reagan, this mythical icon hero of the republicans raised the debt ceiling 17 times. you had george bush the boy who raised the debt ceiling seven times after he squandered $500 billion -- >> but they don't seem to mention that in this last few little few weeks. >> you know what i think -- >> let me ask you, laura. i want to ask you this, though. secretary treasure tim geithner is saying he will step down after the debt ceiling debate is resolved. >> some say this is about making the democratic side look weeker at this point, but i think there will be a deal eventually. there's even talk today
